Three biggest challenges facing an English learner
ReplyDeleteby Tomasz P. Szynalski
This article talks about a very important topic. I have related it with the motivation that every English learner has to have if is really interested in English learning. But, we can not only learn English, we have to live a process in which we improve every competence according to have a right development about a new language learning.
The first challenge is called: Developing a passion for learning English
We are English learners. for that reason, we want to find the ideal way to learn the language. sometimes, we see English learning like a duty, but it is not. We have to see pleasure in learning English.
We have to feel love for English. We can not sit down and hope the process is completed by itself. There are a lot of things that we can learn from. It is better if we see English learning like a hobby that we must enjoy to do.
The second challenge is called: Making the first change to one’s life
To learn English, we have to start to make changes in our lives. it is necessary because of we need to have a permanent learning process. We can begin doing little changes, but these must be effectives.
The third challenge is called: Making further changes to one’s life
We have to keep the process. We can find a lot of different activities to make the changes, and that way we can improve our English leaning process. We can build a good process strengthening every single skill. To do that, we must make different changes that have to be fulfilled day by day.
English learning could be a very hard challenge, buy it really depends on us. If we want to learn English then we will find an appropriate way to do it.
“The best way to learn a foreign language is to go to a foreign country” By Tomasz P. Szynalski.
ReplyDeleteThis article explain a myth about learn a foreign language and start it contextualizing the idea of many people.
Some people think that when someone is in a foreign country, that person will learn immediately the language of the country where the person is visiting. For that reason some parents opt to send their children for they learn efficiently a foreign language.
But the article show the fact of this “myth” and this is that even when people spend a lot of time as immigrants, they do not learn to speak in English in the correct way. Because they do not fell pressure to do it. Besides, other people are normally too polite to correct them, so they become accustomed.
In this way, is false to say that for you to learn a foreign language, you have to be in a foreign country. Because you can learn, teach and also communicate without to use the correct grammar or pronunciation and even so make you understand to survive. But is does not mean that you are not much better off than someone who is learning the language in his own country.
In addition when you are in a foreign country, you are always worried for speak, because your life depends of it, and not for your grammar or for write very well. The author makes emphasis in to remember that a native speaker will not correct your mistakes. Instead, they will try to be nice and try to understand you, no matter how bad your grammar is.
In each person must have the motivation to learn a foreign language. If someone does not have it, is useless to travel abroad because the person will be in a comfort zone.
Finally the article shows us some advantages to travel abroad to learn a foreign language like: easy access to native speakers that you can converse with, the opportunity to perfect your listening skills and the opportunity to learn useful everyday words which are not frequently heard on TV or in movies. And it tries to give us some advice: After you’ve learned to speak the language fluently, you can go abroad to polish your listening skills and make your vocabulary a bit more native-like.
According to the article “The role of teachers in the 21st century”, written in 2009 by Éva Ujlakyné Szucs. I am going to mention some changes about the role of teachers in the 21st century. Likewise, I will express some ideas about society's expectations. Finally, the use of technology like a new resource of teaching and learning.
ReplyDeleteThe education has come facing many challenges through the history but in the 21st century, teachers have become facilitators of the knowledge because new generations’ needs require teachers who are able to implement new ideas, plans and resources like technology in order to improve the teaching and the learning of English.
Besides, the society wants teachers to forget the teaching of the verb “To be”, such as the only one topic during all the schooling years and start to be really good English language teachers. This is to say, the society wants teachers to be able to face new challenges of this era.
On the other hand, technology is playing a major role inside the society, and the education could not be the exception. Nowadays, everything is revolving around technology. Then, the education have had to adapt to these new advances and teachers have had to implement them like resources of teaching, This is to say, technology has become so important that all teachers must be qualified for putting it into practice and make good use of it.
Finally, I think that the teaching and learning of English must improve in all aspects and the government must pay attention to the new plans that are implemented because some test show that the efficiency teachers’ is really bad since students are not showing high outcomes in national tests in relation to English.
In the opinion article based on the book WHY DO NOT THEY LEARN ENGLISH?
ReplyDeleteSeparating Fact from Fallacy in the U.S .Language Debate
by LUCY TSE
NEW YORK: Teachers College Press, 2001. 120 PP
We can see the contrast by Tse when she relates as learning English language is a strong pressure for almost forgotten mother tongue of an immigrant. and how that pressure by government laws reject the use of his own language giving a change processes of communication generation after generation in the immigrant society who live in United States.
According to statistics provided by the government in recent years, the rates of learning and quality of English by the inmigrantes have been low, A opinion to which Lucy Tse opposes offset with investigations realized in the same immigrant communities and realizing that the design of bilingual programs in the country are provided in an indirect or direct a way to erase all traces of a language other than English. A great irony knowing that that is the land of opportunity.
Also she highlighting the point that appointment. that in order to obtain a competitive status in the market must have a management and understanding of social and cultural topics in a near-native level for the immigrant who wants to aspire to belong to American society. as this ah been ruled on by the US Congress decrees, which in many cases would seem illogical and even absurd. if we understood the concept of globalization. we will know that you need to have an interaction with other cultures and will be necessary the knowledge of two or more languages and not only a language standardized.
Finally according to studies Tse and contrary to what statistics show, the immigrants are learning English quickly and efficiently, thus showing that. there is no interest in age or social stratum to achieve a prominent position in American society. On the other hand Tse showed that the interest of immigrants to develop their linguistic skills is influenced by social context. which in many cases would not be as beneficial for their own language and culture.
In my opinion the best way to implement bilingualism without neglecting mother tongue. is to design in culturales aspects of immigrants in the bilingualism school programs this change of perspective will give them a chance to expression a open way without fear to be judged by the color, origin or skin.
TOWARDS A CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING. BY ANA PATRICIA MUÑOZ RESTREPO (MAGISTER EN TESOL, EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY).
ReplyDeleteThis article discusses the various theories that have emerged throughout history about the teaching of foreign languages. Besides this, try to explain how you learn a language, given the linguistic and psychological aspects.
Likewise, this article describes some of the major learning theories such as behaviorism, cognotivismo and socio-constructivism. Also the methodological principles that guide the teaching of foreign languages are established.
As behaviorism in language teaching, is mainly based on audiolingual method. With this method, what is sought is that the student does not resort to the translation or the use of the mother tongue, because such behavior generates errors in language learning.
The cognitivist approach, is that students construct their knowledge from mental processes through exercises to ensure understanding of concepts, and the socio-constructivist approach is based on social interaction and knowledge, since language is based on the communicative approach.
Finally in this article, we talk about the methodology of teaching that is linking theory and practice through audiolingual process.
In conclusion, this article makes me conclude that the best way to learn a language is by practicing it, through the communicative approach and different skills in the language taught.
The Role of Music in Young Learners’ Oral Production in English
ReplyDeleteBy Daniel Fernando Pérez Niño
Universidad Nacional de Colombia
According with the article the author shows how young learners view music as a ludic tool that will improve their oral performance and how the activities applied by the music teacher help to reinforce the language topics studied in other classes.
The article invited to recognize that the music and other activities do not belong to traditional way of the teaching young learners. Although, we talk of the teaching it refers just about teaching structures. When the teachers create new ways of teaching this let that each student develops many skill`s students. For example listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar are abilities that even now
A teacher always search the way of giving his knowledge of different ways. Is this important of mention because in this document present two features that present the music:
The teacher used some pop songs and this activity is the most listening activities he planned in order to promote the speaking part. As a goal, the children enjoyed doing listening activities.
The teacher plays some instruments by which students come to understand the various issues easier.
I like the form as the teachers include visual aids for the development of their activities. However, the music is the great support for improving some weakness. The listening English music allows to reflective about of different challenges and supports the public education. When we are listening English music learn vocabulary and some expression.
UNDERSTANDING TEACHER LABOR MARKETS: IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATIONAL EQUITY
ReplyDeleteBy: Donald Boyd, Hamilton Lankford, Susanna Loeb, and James Wyckoff
Year of Publication: 2003
Editors: In D. Monk & M. Plecki
Publication: School Finance and Teacher Quality: Exploring the Connections, AEFA 2003 Yearbook.
This interesting article is about equity in education, but it focuses on fairness of education in general though this is a difficult claim, due to situations that are currently in educational establishments.
Federal authorities in the United States could not find ways or possible solutions to the difficulties and low school performance that schools students present public specifically for education in these schools, is obviously of less quality and does not count with the necessary and essential resources that has private schools.
This problem occurs in all parts of the world, and is a very important issue, as the base and the development of a society depends on children with an excellent education, based on respect, tolerance and the equally, inside and outside the classroom. But unfortunately this almost does not apply in classrooms because of discrimination, because of different beliefs, customs, races, economic status, sexual orientations and different factors that do not allow an equality in the educational aspect.
Finally I think that this issue should be treated with more depth and interest from national Governments, the teachers and the students themselves, creating an environment where everyone can interact, leaving aside the prototypes and the differences that exist between them, to achieve a quality education with excellence and equality of conditions.
Can you become bilingual?
ReplyDeleteBY : Monica Castelblanco.teacher (TEFL)
this article ties to explain the mastery of a second language depends on several factors. From birth, unless we have a speech impediment, we can all learn to speak. However, there are people who achieve a greater mastery of their own language than others. Just because some people are born with more language skills than others, just as there are people with more talent than others topics.but really oll can learn a soecond langugages whit some news tools that maybe can help us.
Another factor is the medium. No doubt the ability to express themselves well in any language is determined by the brain, this is an hability that can impove whit the time, so if you want to lear a secon languages you also try to estudy and practice whit a continuous pactice. Those who grow up in an environment in which the habit of reading and oratory seen, probably have a greater mastery of their own language, to those who are not exposed to this type of knowledge and training.
With respect to a second language influences largely age. For some reason not yet understood by science, when we reach puberty started gradually losing two key skills in learning a language, first, the ability to correctly reproduce the new sounds and second, the ability to learn by imitation, letting the new sounds to flow without putting mental barriers.
From adolescence, the brain is no longer easily modeable clay consequently begin to subconsciously reject the new sounds and linguistic constructs. In practice this means that, although we talk all day on this new language, speak with an accent and we have to start studying to speak properly.
How are you going to reach the goal?
you must chart a path to reach the goal that you've taken on.
To pass some tests, or take a trip, you can make do with studying English occasionally. But becoming bilingual require all your dedication; you will spare no effort and must earnestly, every day of your life to learn: go live some time in a English speaking country, do intensive courses, hire a teacher, read all kinds of texts in English, talk to natives, watching movies in English. its are some tips that can help you to improve you lever in the languages that you prefer.

ReplyDeleteAuthor: Javier Álvarez, 2012
In the past the schools used to teach in their classes the Latin language and the Greek language. But ,this teaching has been deleted from the curriculum the many institution around the world, because languague like the English replaced them in many aspects of the life.
The intention of this article taken from internet is to give the students some reasons for what in company the languages(English, French, German, etc) they are learning , they begin to learn the Latin language or Greek languagefor getting better his education in language and have an ampler vision of the world.
1. To improve the knowledge about English
Althouhg, we all know English came from the Germanic languages, it’s important to know that the 65% English vocabulary is composed by the Latin language and the Greek language. As examples: Salvation from Latin Salvare; Spririt from Latin Spiritus; etc.

CONSTRUCTIVIST LEARNING
ReplyDeleteBy Dimitrios Thanasoulas, Greece
To write and talk about constructivism he began making a short summarize about its history. He said that constructivism is a learning philosophy and he is based on the work of the philosopher Giambattista Vico. Constructivism is considered an interdisciplinary perspective because it is based on physiological, sociological, philosophical and critical education theories. Also, it consist in consider the learner as an important agent in the learning process without downplaying teachers.
Within constructivism the learning and teaching process is focused in the student through his interaction with the environment, which interaction helps him to build his own knowledge with tools that teachers give them, it means, students begin to be autonomous.
Piaget is one of the most important exponents of constructivism, according to him the basis of the learning is discovery divided in stages therefore; the knowledge is build step by step.
In other words, constructivism made emphasis in world knowledge, beliefs, and skills to build a new knowledge take into account the previous knowledge. Thus, it will give more importance to learning than teaching; will promote the autonomy and personal involvement in learning. What is more, constructivism will allow students to take responsibility for their own learning.
In conclusion, from a constructivism view the knowledge has a personal main because it is created by students; they build their own knowledge in relation to meaning and order being able to draw their own conclusions.
This article was taken from magazines rate "human sciences" magazine No. 16 By Jairo Parra Jesus Guevara. "Teaching English in the Digital Age"
ReplyDeleteUsing the potential of the network in language learning is just beginning to be exploited as the role of teachers in the process incorporating the variety of resources offered by the Internet, will be able to be used in language learning, it is worthy of be evaluated with a view to offering our present generation the opportunity to participate in a teaching-learning process more in line with the reality in which we are located due to the rapid scientific and technological advances.
As the world is involved in the called digital age, are increasingly areas of human knowledge that strive to take advantage of the electronic resources of the "World Wide Web"; given the wealth of information that offers these means of communication and interaction through computers. As expected, education in general and in particular the area of language teaching worldwide, they could not ignore this fact so obvious. Specialists in the teaching of languages, particularly those engaged in teaching English as a second language or as a foreign language have been given the task of investigating the use of the Internet as the "great resource" for teaching and learning of languages, which is to disposition of teachers and students at all levels of education.
Moreover, you can also access many advantages in using the resource, among these we can mention: active participation, academic exchange of views and share opinions, and academic questions via e-mail; attending virtual conferences relevant to the profession, see pages dedicated solely to issues related to the teaching and learning of languages, where appearance specific issues of phonetics, vocabulary, grammar, speaking, consulting dictionaries and translators as well as many contributions of cultural way.
In conclusion called digital age offers us, who in one way or another we are involved in teaching languages, a wide space of action with multiple variables, worthy of being analyzed and evaluated from the pedagogical point of view, in order to be implemented in our educational institutions, considering the fact that in the currently we confront to one generation is living today and moves around different changes, in which rapid scientific and technological advances require review of curricular structures that must be adapted to changes as institutional screenings and educational needs of each entity.
Assisting Students with Foreign Language Learning Difficulties in School.
ReplyDeleteBy: Leonore Ganschow and Elke Schneider
Nowadays, the study of another language in school is often a requirement; for example, to students of an undergraduate program must have 4 levels at least; however, there are some students that have difficulties with learning of english, for that, they can find the compliance of this imposible; nevertheless, the students that present this difficulties in most cases are the same that have Reading and spelling difficulties in their native language in early schooling.
The students that have difficulties learning in a foreing language are named as “at- risk “ it is becouse of, their language learning disabilities; then , these are generally in the oral and written aspects that can occur at differents levels of seveity in two áreas or components of language, that are phonological ,that are represent in orthographic; then, the student that have this dificulty, might not remember the sound of different vowels and consonants, making that they have problems in spelling and pronuntiation.
The next is the syntactic component, in this can be evidenced problems of use incorrect of verb tenses, also they may have difficulty for differentiating the gender of the gramatical person and exchanging nouns on place of adjectives; however, this type of students probably will be well in their first semester, becouse of, it is relatively easy; nevertheless, the real problem started in advanced level courses, for that, students difficulties increase to measure that complexity increases.
Therefore, teachers have a big challenge, it is give an adecuate training process including the diversity of needs of each student, providing an adecuate environment where they can be confortable and give them special importance and more intensive instruction; however, this require extra time and practice one to one, at the same time, they have to employ most beneficial methods for “at- risk” promoting an inclusive learning and making use of defferent tools, as visual or auditive aids, provide spaces and opportunities to practice and reinforce concepts, having into account that not all students can learn in the same way.
Despite of it seems too difficult task, across of sistematic and permanent process “at risk” will be able to improve this difficulties, as in, undertand and produce in a good way a foreing language, although it requires looking for additional help, and this can be a positive and culturally broadening experience as well to teacher as to learner.
The article “Behaviorism: A new way to teach” is about the behaviorism. This interesting topic currently is used like a strategy in the learning- teaching process. Ahead, I am going to expose the first steps of this theory. And, the second part is about how the behaviorism has advances through the pass of the time.
ReplyDeleteThe behaviorism was formed by Jhon B. Watson in 1920. Basically, it studies how the learning process affects our behavior and vice versa. Also, it studies how the stimulus can help in an easily way to learn faster new things.
It happens because it motivates to the students with recompense when they do an attempt. Although, sometimes. The teachers use a kind of penalization when their students are not interested in their own learning process. That use of the behaviorism would be very negative for the students with troubles in learning process. Especially in young students.
The younger students (from 3 to 8 years old in the nowadays) are still searching and getting their own methods of learning. So, depending of some factors as parenting, the childhood and the type of education that they received, they form their behavior.
Currently, according to B.F Skinner describes how people’s behavior is based on the consequences that their behavior brings. It means that if that behavior has a positive response. It will repeat again.
Coming back on the education zone. The behaviorism theory says that the teacher must provide the students with necessary motivation to learn the information correctly.
In conclusion, the behaviorism probably can be watching it like a traditional and antique way to teach. But, if it is used in a right manner and doing it more dynamic. It will become onto a excellent strategy in your classroom.
LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE ACCORDING TO VALUES AND CONTEXT
ReplyDeleteThe present essay aims to encourage to reflection around the possibilities of the evaluation of learning from to formative view, In the first one, I am going to talk about the acquisition of second language based on social interaction, in the second one I am going to treat the learning of a foreign language from the Chomsky´s point of view, and finally I am going to talk about intercultural language.
In the following text I will talk about the document that I read. This document has been called "Teaching and Learning Languages - a Guide" by Angela Scarino and Anthony J Liddicoat. This was written in the year 2009. Their main subject is the learning of to foreign language according to the culture, moreover it seeks the recognition and the acceptance of other cultures and languages through own culture and language.
The best teaching of a second language is based on social interaction. Therefore, in this sense teaching must keep in mind aspects such as the context, values, and the culture. I think that teacher cannot simply gives the students a teaching which is focused on acquiring knowledge, (grammar, punctuation and other aspects) that aims to be put into practice; rather, students may develop their skills over time and in diverse contexts interacting among them taking into account ongoing experiences and reflections. For that reason the teachers as social beings should build the world of teaching and learning, according to their values and knowledge.
Consequently, students need to understand the way how they learn. They need to develop self-awareness of themselves as learners; I am agreement with this strong connection between learning and identity. It is a great conception of what language and culture are and do, and how they interpret and create meaning of the intercultural language, developing and understanding their own language and culture in relation to an additional language and culture. It is a place where variable points of view are recognized, mediated, and accepted.
The linguist Noam Chomsky (1957) says that second language, similar to the learning of the native language focuses on imitation, practice, encouragement; in this case, second language is better achieved from imitation and habit formation with the other culture.
As final statement, learners who are engaged in intercultural language learning develop a reflective stance towards language and culture. Those instances could be applied in the mother tongue and additional languages and cultures, and generally they could understand the way in which language and culture exist in the world.
Why Should We Learn English?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Kenji Kitao, in her article published in The Internet TESL Journal, Vol. II, No. 4, April 2003. She tells us why Japanese teachers teach English as a foreign language that another language.
First of all, is important to know that English is the rifest language worldwide as speakers of English as second language or foreign language as native English speakers. In addition, English is used for communicating among others people whom have different language for we can learn about others cultures.
Some uses of English are:
-English for News and Information: Currently, English is used as medium for communicating and informing us because we can see that majority of information in newspapers, magazines, television or internet are published in English.
-English for Business, Diplomacy, and Professions: English is the common language in diplomacy, science, and business. It permits the communication among professionals, business owners and many international organizations for conferences and reunions.
-English for Entertainment
*Popular culture: We can see that music and movies have been influencing in worldwide but these are in English. Also, the majority books are in English. So, one reason that students give for learning English is to understand these songs, movies and books.
*Travel: When we travel to others countries we can see that much of the information countries disseminate about themselves outside of their borders is in English. Also, we look that in hotels, airports, tourist attractions, and in malls all people speak in English.
According to Kenji Kitao, English is an important language in the world. Also, we can use it not only for communicating us between native speakers and nonnative speakers of English but between nonnative speakers too.
Finally, for me this article shows us the importance of learn English because it is a language that permits to communicate between other people for sharing our costumes, culture, and traditions. Also, to learn another language is not a problem because there are different mediums for we can learn other language especially English.
What's 'Normal,' What's Not: Acquiring English as a Second Language
ReplyDeleteThis article was written by Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin and Alejandro Brice in 2005 this is a research article about how children learn English like second language and How you can tell when a student has a language-learning disability and when they is merely in the normal process of acquiring a second language.
Most often the teachers referring to some student say that these children are not learning English with the expected speed and their academic skills are lagging behind those of their monolingual English-speaking classmates but before making “false positive” is necessary understand the normal processes and phenomena of second-language acquisition.
Children may manifest interference or transfer from their first language to English; this is a normal phenomenon – a sign of a language difference, not a language disorder. They may also manifest a common second-language acquisition phenomenon called the silent period. When children are first exposed to a second language, frequently they focus on listening and comprehension. These children are often very quiet, speaking little as they focus on understanding the new language.
For this reason what teachers believe is a learning disability is really the logical response to a process of learning by the child who sometimes tends to mix linguistic structures of two languages, their native language and their second language.
I think in the process of second language learning both teacher and student must have patience and take the time necessary for learning, since this ultimately brings many benefits including improved mental abilities of the speaker.
The Importance of Teaching Critical Thinking
ReplyDeleteby Ronda Blevins 2014/07/12
This article is about the importance of encourage critical thinking in our students
As the article states “Critical thinking is a term that is given much discussion without much action”, this means that in current education system it's more important to get better test scores, without realize the lack of critical thinking skills that are necessary to succeed in higher education or in the workplace.
There are many reasons why education system are not focussed on critical thinking, for instance the need to have better scores on assessments. Besides doubts about how, why and if it is important to teach it.
Quite often, critical thinking is something that has been overlooked at the elementary, middle, and high school levels where students are taught how to learn, as well as how to analyze information. When these students make it to the level of higher education or the workforce, the educators and trainers are forced to begin by teaching critical thinking skills as opposed to beginning with the information that needs to be conveyed.
I'm in agreement that learning requires effort, but critical thinking requires our intellectual capability. For this reason and the lack of time available to educators, much critical thinking has been left for higher education .
Moreover It is important for educators to understand that the role they play in developing critical thinking is different than the role they are used to play. In order to engage students in critical thinking, the educator needs to act as a facilitator to allow for discussion and encourage a freer thought process.
In conclusion, working to increase critical thinking by students will be great for both students and educators. They also will increase their creativity, performance, and literacy . Challenging their students to think critically, teachers will find in themselves a way to thinking more critically about their job as educators.

ReplyDeleteTHE BENEFIST OF MUSIC EDUCATION TO CHILDREN
ReplyDeleteThe article is called the benefits of music education to children and was writen by Edward droscher on june of 2006 in a web called education articles and talks about that the music is a great skill to teach as to learn.
Music is used since the greek times to improve the health in the humans, but recently studies shows that the music is a great formed of society, and help that the people develop in a group like a creative and thinking person
The author says that music is a part of an our society and express all feelings that human want to show, also some studies showed that the music improve to forme workplace as team work, at the same time help to comunication skill and cognitive skill, studies show that people that join in the music world will have high grades in in some diferent subjects like mathematic and fisic into others.
Music is related to the IQ of students as a connection betwen music and spatial intelligence and knowledge also, at the same time that students are enjoying music, they are making an effectively work in the school , they try to stay in a good way avoiding problems related to alcohol, drugs and fights .
In conclusion, the music will help to increase and enrich all people with too much knowledge and in the same way the music is improving the creative thinking solving some individually and team problems.
I choose this article because I think that education will need more things than the traditional education, the education needs more than a person which stands in front of the students and gives ordes like a boss, for that reason music is a good way to learn and to teach because if I am in a classroom it will move feelings and will make that people are excited for understanding and getting more information.
